UK-based Carbon8 Systems (Carbon8) combines industrial waste with captured carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to produce low-cost valuable products. The company’s patented process is called Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT). Carbon8’s product range includes construction products and agricultural fertilizers. The company has also developed an on-site containerized solution called the “CO₂ntainer,” which could treat up to 12,000 metric tons of waste materials annually and utilize over 30,000 metric tons of waste carbon dioxide over its lifetime (depending on the reactivity of the waste treated).

Key customers and partnerships

In July 2020, Carbon8 Systems signed a commercial agreement with Vicat Group (a French cement company) for the first commercial deployment of Carbon8’s CO₂ntainer in southern France. In September 2020, the company deployed a pilot project at AVR’s (a company processing residual waste) Energy from Waste (EfW) plant in Duiven, Netherlands. In June 2021, Carbon8 signed a technology partnership with FLSmidth (a Danish supplier for cement and mining industries) to utilize Carbon8’s technology to deliver sustainable solutions for the cement industry.

In November 2022, the company partnered with Return Carbon, a Dutch investment platform focusing on CCUS projects, to leverage Carbon8’s ACT process in Belgium and the Netherlands.

In May 2024, Carbon8 signed an MoU with Mannock Cement to implement Carbon8’s CCUS technology at Mannock’s cement plant in Derrylin, Ireland.

Funding and Financials

In December 2023, Carbon8 received a UK Government grant to accelerate its use of AI and machine learning to boost the CO₂ uptake of its CCUS technology in collaboration with Swansea University's ASTUTE Centre.

Carbon8 Systems' most recent funding was in June 2022, when it raised GBP 5 million (USD 6 million) co-led by Vicat and EDF. The funds were used to scale up the commercialization of its ACT and R&D activities. In April 2021, Carbon8-led consortium South Wales Industrial Cluster (SWIC) received a grant of GBP 1.5 million (USD 2 million) from the UK Research and Innovation program to achieve net-zero emissions in South Wales. In January 2019, Carbon8 received EUR 71,400 (USD 84,000) from a grant by EASME—EU Executive Agency for SMEs.
