LifeX is a Danish co-living startup based in Copenhagen and Berlin that provides fully-furnished shared living spaces for young professionals. The company partners with property owners to rent out large apartments, design the interiors with a Nordic aesthetic, and offer amenities like weekly cleaning services and shared communal spaces. LifeX operates on a flexible membership model without long-term leases, catering to the needs of a global and mobile workforce.
As of 2021, LifeX operated over 70 co-living properties across Copenhagen, London, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Munich, and Vienna, with more than 350 members from over 50 countries. The company was founded in June 2017 by Sune Theodorsen and Ritu Jain, and has raised a total of USD 19.9 million in funding over three rounds from investors like Cherry Ventures, Founders, and TriplePoint Capital.
LifeX's business model proved resilient during the Covid-19 pandemic, with 90% of members agreeing that co-living made lockdowns easier, according to a survey by the company. The pandemic also highlighted the importance of community and sustainability, which LifeX aims to address through its co-living concept.
In 2021, LifeX expanded into Belgium through a partnership with property developer Candor and secured a deal with a Danish pension fund to develop its largest purpose-built co-living property in Copenhagen. These partnerships represent a new growth phase for LifeX as it continues to scale and meet the increasing demand for co-living.
Key customers and partnerships
LifeX has established partnerships with leading property development companies to facilitate its expansion into new markets and secure properties for its co-living operations. In 2021, the company partnered with Belgian developer Candor to enter the Belgian market and open its first properties in Brussels.
Additionally, LifeX secured a deal with a real estate subsidiary of one of Denmark's leading pension funds to develop its largest single property to date in Copenhagen. This property will be designed and built specifically for LifeX's co-living concept, incorporating sustainability and other factors based on the company's specifications.
LifeX also maintains partnerships with other real estate companies, such as Danish firm Kereby, a subsidiary of Blackstone. Through this partnership, LifeX was set to open three additional family-style co-living properties in the summer of 2021.
