QLM Technology Ltd is a UK-based photonics technology company that has developed a quantum-based Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) camera for monitoring, detecting, and accurately quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. Headquartered in Cardiff with operations in Bristol and San Francisco, the company's imaging technology combines LiDAR, gas absorption spectroscopy, and single-photon detection to visualize, localize, and measure emission rates of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as methane.
QLM's quantum gas imaging LiDAR solution offers industry-leading quantification performance, enabling customers in GHG-intensive industries to identify and prioritize the most significant emitters for remediation cost-effectively. The inherently scalable lidar technology facilitates wide deployment by reducing costs at high production volumes. In August 2022, QLM secured GBP 12 million in Series A funding led by Schlumberger to scale manufacturing and launch its product across various GHG-intensive sectors.
A related version of QLM's product enables remote quantification of flare efficiency, ensuring optimal efficiency where flares cannot be eliminated yet. Beyond the oil and gas market, the company's solution is well-suited for tracking and reducing methane emissions in applications like biogas production, landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and coal mines.
Key customers and partnerships
Through a strategic collaboration announced in August 2022, QLM's quantum gas imaging LiDAR technology will be integrated into Schlumberger's End-to-end Emissions Solutions (SEES) business offering for the oil and gas industry. SEES' methane monitoring capabilities, previously based on satellite, aerial, and ground-based sensors, will be complemented by QLM's continuous monitoring solution for accurate, sensitive measurements at facilities of all sizes across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments.
