Based in Sweden, Grönska Stadsodling is a provider of in-store vertical farming cabinets. During its initial years of operation, the company focused on managing a large-scale vertical farm in Stockholm. However, in 2021, the company shifted its focus to becoming a technology provider for the vertical farming industry, prioritizing vertical farming cabinets—the Grönska GrowOff units.
Grönska GrowOff is a closed-loop system, capable of producing around 300 plants (herbs, leafy greens, vegetables, edible flowers) per month per sq m and can be placed anywhere, including supermarkets, schools, and restaurants. It claims to use 95% less water than free-land farming, minimize nutrient leakages, and eliminate the need for pesticides while also saving between 39% and 67% CO2 compared to a high-tech greenhouse.
GrowOff units come with pre-seeded cassettes or trays covered with a germination film. The units are connected to an app that alerts users to remove the film after the seeds have germinated and when it is time to harvest. The trays are ordered on a subscription basis.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2019, Grönska partnered with SAS, a Scandinavian airline, to supply four vertically farmed salad mixes starting in January 2020.
Funding and Financials
In September 2023, Grönska secured undisclosed funding from Nefco to scale up its vertical farming solution, GrowOff, in the European and US markets. Previously, the company raised USD 2.4 million in a Series A funding round in December 2021 to advance technology for its GrowOff systems.
