Dandelion Energy offers residential geothermal energy solutions. Dandelion was initially a part of Google X—the tech giant’s experimental business wing—before being spun out into an independent company in 2017.

Dandelion offers a geothermal heat pump for residential units. During the summer, the heat pump draws heat from the air in the house and transfers it to the ground, while in the winter, the heat pump draws heat from the ground and transfers it to the house. This would eliminate the need for an air conditioner or a furnace at home. Dandelion claims that its geothermal solution is around 47% cheaper than using a fuel oil furnace and around 14% cheaper than using a central air conditioner. In September 2024, the company launched Dandelion Geo, a geothermal heat pump with heating performance of up to 63,000 Btu/hr.

Key customers and partnerships

As of November 2022, Dandelion has installed over 1,000 pumps.

In April 2022, Dandelion partnered with Robison, where the latter agreed to install geothermal heating and cooling solutions. In November 2022, Dandelion partnered with Accrue Savings to enable its customers to save in installments for the total cost of the installation. In April 2023, the company partnered with EmPower to offer the latter’s customers USD 500 off their Dandelion system. In September 2023, Dandelion partnered with Palmetto to expand access to their solar services and geothermal energy by launching a program in Massachusetts.

In January 2022, Dandelion acquired Glacier Drilling, a Connecticut company providing drilling and related services to residential and commercial customers, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will complement Dandelion’s geothermal offerings in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

Funding and financials

Dandelion’s most recent funding round was in November 2022, when the company raised USD 70 million in a Series B1 funding round led by LENX. The company will use this funding to support its expansion into retrofit and new construction markets as well as to invest in a broader range of products capable of serving more customers and geographies. Prior to this in February 2021, Dandelion raised USD 30 million in a Series B round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
