FortePhest is an Israeli biotech startup focused on developing innovative crop protection products to combat herbicide-resistant weeds and invasive plants. Founded in 2017, the company has pioneered the development of several classes of herbicides leveraging a novel mechanism of action to inhibit weed growth while causing no harm to high-value crops such as corn and wheat.
FortePhest's proprietary herbicides, branded as H-Forte, disrupt the homeostasis of free amino acids in plant cells and selectively target a weed's meristems, stopping the development of shoots and roots. This technology was inspired by natural plant protectors and targets the phenylalanine tRNA synthetase enzyme involved in protein synthesis, thereby controlling resistant weeds by disrupting the structure of their proteins.
In February 2022, German chemical giant BASF, through its investment arm BASF Venture Capital, led a Series B funding round in FortePhest, along with investments from Orbia Ventures, Sherpa InnoVentures, SIBF II, and other investors. The capital raised aimed to accelerate FortePhest's development programs and enable collaboration with potential global partners for commercializing its novel crop protection products.
