Aerbio, formed as a part of a buyout of Deep Branch Biotechnology, is a company focused on producing sustainable animal feed through innovative biotechnology. The company's core product, ProtonRM, is a protein-based feed ingredient created using carbon dioxide, water, hydrogen, and micro-organisms. This process significantly reduces CO2 emissions by over 90% compared to traditional protein sources for animal feed. Aerbio's technology aims to transform food production and supply chains by offering an alternative to conventional fishmeal and soy, which are associated with environmental concerns such as overfishing and deforestation. The company's protein production method is designed to be more environmentally friendly, addressing issues related to biodiversity loss and the carbon footprint of transporting traditional feed ingredients.
In November 2020, Aerbio announced plans to construct a pilot plant at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in the Netherlands. This facility, partially supported by a 2.5 million Euro grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator, was expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2021. The pilot plant is crucial for developing the right formulas for ProtonRM and enabling food producers to conduct extensive tests on the proteins. Following the pilot phase, Aerbio planned to expand its protein production activities at the Chemelot Industrial Park, with the potential to establish a large-scale production facility in the future.
