Canvas is a construction robotics company founded in 2017 that has developed an innovative robotic drywall finishing system. The company's technology aims to empower skilled workers and transform the drywall finishing process by making it safer, more efficient, and of higher quality. Canvas's robotic system automates two of the most challenging aspects of drywall finishing: mudding and sanding. The machine can apply both level five and level four drywall finishes in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods, while maintaining a higher level of safety and reliability. In June 2022, Canvas launched its Level 4 Targeted Spray (L4TS) system, which enables more precise application of joint compound only to drywall seams. The Canvas system captures 99.9% of the dust produced during sanding, reduces the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, and allows workers to perform elevated work from ground level, significantly decreasing the chance of falls. The company's technology also helps address the construction industry's chronic labor shortage by making the trade more attractive to younger workers and extending the careers of experienced tradespeople. Canvas machines are operated by trained Canvas Certified Finishers who can complete projects faster while producing consistently high-quality finishes.

Key customers and partnerships

Canvas has established partnerships with several leading construction companies through its Innovation Partner Program. These partners have access to Canvas machines and train their crews to operate them independently. In March 2023, Canvas announced a strategic partnership with Hilti, a global leader in construction tools and technology. As part of this collaboration, Hilti will assume manufacturing responsibilities for future Canvas systems based on their Jaibot platform, providing Canvas with a reliable and scalable global supply to meet the growing demand for its finishing robots.
