Signifier Medical Technologies is a UK-based medical device manufacturer focused on developing non-invasive solutions for sleep-disordered breathing conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and primary snoring. The company’s flagship device, eXciteOSA, is a daytime device that uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to "exercise" the upper airway muscles, improving their endurance and preventing airway collapse during sleep, which the company claims is the first and only clinically proven medical device to do so.
eXciteOSA aims to improve muscle function and can be used by patients while awake, unlike traditional sleep apnea devices. The company has also developed an app that connects with the device to enable the remote monitoring of a patient’s progress. The prescription device is made to be worn daily, for 20-minute sessions over a 6-week period and twice-weekly thereafter.
In April 2024, South Carolina's Medicaid program began covering eXciteOSA, expanding access to this innovative therapy.
Key customers and partnerships
Following FDA authorization through the de novo pathway in February 2021, eXciteOSA launched commercially in the US and has since treated over 10,000 patients as of March 2023. Furthermore, in May 2023, the company announced a partnership with Sunrise, a health tech firm offering AI-powered home sleep testing, aiming to improve patient care through efficient diagnostics and treatments for OSA.
Funding and financials
The company completed a Series D funding round in July 2021, which brought its total funding to USD 58 million. The funds were directed towards the commercialization of its eXciteOSA system.
