Terrapure Environmental is a Canadian environmental services company that specializes in waste management and industrial services. Prior to its acquisition by GFL Environmental in August 2021, Terrapure provided integrated solid and liquid waste management services to over 7,000 customers across Canada. The company's operations included landfill management, liquid and solid waste collection, and processing facilities. In 2020, Terrapure's operations generated revenue of approximately CUSD 365 million. The company maintained a fleet of more than 500 collection vehicles and operated environmental and organics solutions that covered various waste streams from generation through collection, processing, recovery, recycling, reuse, and disposal.
At its facility in Ville de Sainte-Catherine, Quebec, Terrapure operated a battery recycling business, which processed 12 million batteries annually. In October 2023, the company expanded this facility with a USD 30 million plastics recycling system, making it the largest of its kind in Canada. The facility processes polypropylene battery casings, converting them into pellets through washing, shredding, and extrusion. Operating five days per week for 16 hours daily, the facility can produce approximately 10,000 metric tons of pellets annually, enabling the recovery of over 90% of lead battery components.
