Space Power is a UK-based in-orbit servicing (IOS) company that develops wireless power transmission technology for spacecraft and satellites using its proprietary LASER power beaming technology. The LASER system adapts its power beam in orbit to maximize power delivery while minimizing costs. The technology enables spacecraft to charge with or without solar power, extending their lifespan and operational capabilities.
In 2022, Space Power demonstrated its LASER power beam technology through TeDe, an advanced ground-based demonstrator that showcased automatic tracking and powerbeaming for lunar rovers. The system features closed-loop feedback beaming, pointing, and tracking systems and can optimize light absorption across different frequencies of the solar spectrum.
The company claims its patented Universal Powerbeaming technology is compatible with any solar panel, regardless of its make, model, or specification. As of November 2024, Space Power had developed an engineered light solution that creates a universal beam of energy that can be directed at solar arrays, enabling missions it claims were previously not possible, including satellite life extension, lunar missions, low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite cluster optimization, and asteroid mining support.
Key customers and partnerships
As of November 2024, Space Power had a launch agreement with BAE Systems, the British multinational defense and aerospace company, for the company’s first In-Orbit Demonstrator.
Space Power collaborated with the University of Surrey in April 2020 to conduct feasibility studies for its beaming tech solutions. In March 2024, Space Power joined the European Space Agency’s (ESA) accelerator program to receive resources for the development of its in-orbit demonstrator.
