Octarine Bio is a Danish synthetic biotech startup that offers a range of bio-based product solutions. Octarine’s flagship product, OB-CLR, is a spectrum of vibrant bio-based dyes that are a replacement for synthetic textile dyes. The dyes can be seamlessly integrated into manufacturers’ existing supply chains and can be applied to natural and synthetic fibers without requiring additional chemicals or mordants. The company uses cell-factory engineering and precision microbial fermentation processes to create bio-based products, such as textile dyes, skincare ingredients, and health supplements.
Alongside its cell engineering and fermentation technology, the company also utilizes its proprietary enzyme technology to enhance the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of natural ingredients and develop value-added products.
Key Customers and Partnerships:
In May 2023, Octarine partnered with cell programming company Ginkgo Bioworks to engineer a strain to produce a pigment called “violacein” (a deep purple hue) and its derivatives (which include blue, green, and pink pigments) at a commercial scale targeting the textile industry. As of October 2023, the company is yet to commercialize its bio-based solutions.
Funding and Financials:
In November 2023 , the company raised EUR 4.35 million (USD 4.6 million) in a funding round led by Unconventional Ventures.
