Lifvs is a checkout-free supermarket chain that operates mini grocery stores in rural areas of Sweden. These stores are powered by a proprietary technology platform called Storekey, which Lifvs also licenses to third-party retailers. The company’s goal is to provide a grocery solution to rural areas with limited access to fresh food.
The company’s stores are unmanned and are operated remotely using AI. The stores come in two sizes—290 sq ft and 580 sq ft. They are built in movable shipping container-like structures and offer a range of about 550 products, including meat, vegetables, dairy products, and household goods.
To enter the Lifvs stores, customers require a user account on the Lifvs app (StoreKey). The customer has to update their user details and card information to register and the app will verify the details using BankID, Sweden's national identification app. Customers can use the Lifvs app to unlock the door to the store and enter it. Customers can subsequently purchase items by scanning the product barcodes using the mobile app and the cost will be automatically deducted from their credit/debit card.
The app uses AI to analyze customer purchase patterns and to offer customers personalized deals and coupons based on their shopping history. The app also provides recipe suggestions and information on bundle deals when an item is scanned. Lifvs intentionally uses a method where customers must physically scan and add items to the app, enabling the app to interact more with the customer when they make their purchase decisions. The store also automatically keeps track of its inventory levels and the sell-by dates, allowing improved inventory management.
