Liquid Wind is a Swedish company developing commercial-scale electrofuel (eFuel) plants to produce carbon-neutral methanol (eMethanol). The company's process combines captured biogenic CO2 emissions with green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity and water. The company also uses digital data twins to design, replicate, and operate its eFuels plants.
Liquid Wind's flagship project, FlagshipONE, located in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, is designed to produce 50,000 tons of eMethanol annually. In December 2022, the Danish energy company, Orsted acquired the FlagshipONE project. In June 2024, Liquid Wind announced the development of a second facility, FlagshipTWO, in Sundsvall, Sweden, with double the capacity of FlagshipONE, aiming to produce 100,000 tons of eMethanol per year.
As of November 2024, Liquid Wind planned to build 10 facilities by 2027 and 500 facilities globally by 2050.
Key customers and partnerships
Liquid Wind partnered with several companies to support its eMethanol production, including Ørsted, Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, and Topsoe. Siemens Energy provides electrolyzers and plant-wide electrification services, while Haldor Topsoe supplies eMethanol technology and process design support.
In September 2022, Liquid Wind announced a collaboration with Gothenburg Port Authority, Stena Line, DFDS, and Ørsted to establish an electrofuel hub. In July 2024, the company partnered with Uniper, the Düsseldorf-based energy company, to accelerate the development of eFuel facilities and produce fossil-free eMethanol by leveraging the companies' strengths and competencies to drive commercial-scale development.
