Montu Group is a technology company operating in the medicinal cannabis industry. It runs an online clinic called Alternaleaf that allows patients to purchase prescription-only medicinal cannabis products after completing an online consultation process. The company's offerings revolve around providing access to medicinal cannabis for treating various diseases and conditions.
Montu Group and its subsidiary Alternaleaf Pty Ltd have faced legal action from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for allegedly advertising medicinal cannabis in an unlawful manner. The TGA claims the companies used terms like "medical cannabis" and "plant medicine" to promote Alternaleaf's online clinic, implying TGA approval and portraying medicinal cannabis as safe or miraculous without proper authorization.
Despite repeated warnings, the companies allegedly continued advertising medicinal cannabis, leading to the TGA initiating court proceedings against Montu Group, Alternaleaf, and their common director, Christopher Strauch, in April 2024. The TGA seeks declarations, penalties, and injunctions to prohibit the alleged unlawful advertising practices.
