Coral Vita is a Bahamas-based company that grows corals in land-based farms to revitalize dying reefs. The company uses micro-fragmentation, which accelerates coral growth rates by up to 50x. This results in corals maturing in months rather than decades, allowing more corals to be cultivated for restoration purposes.

Coral Vita also partakes in assisted evolution, where the company trains the corals to survive in warmer and more acidic ocean conditions by adjusting growing conditions in the tanks. They also breed native corals together and select them based on resilient traits.

Coral Vita offers reef restoration services to clients such as resort and eco-tourism operators looking to create unique experiences, corporates for CSR purposes, governments, and restoration organizations.

The company opened reportedly the world’s first land-based commercial coral farm Grand Bahama in June 2019, cultivating 24 different types of indigenous corals. From February to July 2022, the company completed its first out-planting session, planting roughly 5,600 corals grown at the farm across two areas of the reef. The company also introduced an “ adopt a coral ” campaign, which allows individuals and corporations to sponsor the coral growth process.

Key customers and partnerships

In April 2023, Coral Vita acquired lab systems designed by the Coral Spawning Lab to produce baby corals year-round and signed new contracts to revitalize reef health. In June 2023, the company partnered with sustainable sneaker brand Cariuma to launch a special collection of OCA Low shoes and help save 10 sq cm of coral reef for every pair purchased. Coral Vita has established a fundraising partnership with Corona Beer, where the latter will match every donation made on Coral Vita’s website.

Funding and financials

In February 2022, the company received GBP 500,000 (~USD 625,207) in funding from DP World to develop the first commercial land-based coral farm in the Middle East.
