Demecan is a German medical cannabis company that covers the entire value chain – from cultivation and processing to storage and distribution of medical cannabis products to pharmacies across Germany. It is the only independent German company authorized to cultivate and produce medical cannabis in the country.
In 2019, Demecan secured a four-year government contract from the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) to grow and distribute cannabis for medical purposes. The company's EU-GMP certified production facility near Dresden utilizes high-quality pharmaceutical manufacturing standards to ensure consistent product quality.
Demecan's product offerings include dried cannabis flowers that are distributed directly to the BfArM for supply to pharmacies. In April 2022, the company delivered its first batch of over 100 kg of locally cultivated cannabis flowers, an indica-dominant strain based on the OG Kush cultivar with high THC content. Demecan has an annual production quota of 660 kg for this strain and aims to increase capacity to meet growing domestic demand. Another strain, Typ two Demecan, entered cultivation in March 2022.
The company operates the largest indoor cannabis production facility in Europe, spanning 100,000 square meters near Dresden. It has modular expandable production capacities, enabling rapid scale-up to meet market needs. Demecan acquired and converted the former slaughterhouse facility in under 15 months, equipping it with reinforced concrete walls, steel doors, cameras, and high-tech systems for optimized cultivation.
In October 2022, Demecan announced plans to expand its cultivation footprint further, aiming to increase annual production capacity from the current 10 tonnes to 30 tonnes by the end of 2023. The company was exploring investment opportunities of around EUR 40 million to support this expansion.
