Illinois-based Earnest Agriculture (formerly Earnest Earth) produces soil amendments from agricultural and livestock waste, using a proprietary composting process. Earnest Agriculture offers two soil amendments: 1) “Earnest Compost” and 2) “Earnest Castings” . The compost is produced at the company’s automated warehouse, where agricultural waste, which is collected from partnered farmers using proprietary collection bins, is mixed with microbes and carbon to convert it into compost. The mix is then heated in an air composter at 135o F for four weeks and sifted to produce the final compost. The castings are derived from the compost, where earthworms are added to the latter to convert it into rich earthworm castings.
Earnest's compost, which comes in a 25-quart pack, is priced at USD 5.94 , and the company's castings are priced at USD 10.99 for an 8-quart pack. As of June 2022, Earnest Agricultures sourced its waste from three farmers across Illinois. Earnest aims to partner with farmers, retailers and distributors to expand its reach by offering waste management services and Earnest products, respectively.
The company claims that its fertilizer improves soil fertility and health, increases water infiltration and retention, and promotes biodiversity while reducing carbon emissions and water pollution. The addition of microbes is also stated to improve plants’ resistance to diseases and stress while also increasing nutrient uptake via nitrogen fixation and phosphorus solubilization. The company claims that its product is unique, as it can infuse specific microbe blends into the compost using machine learning.
Funding and financials
In January 2023, the company raised USD 1.2 million in seed funding, and, in July 2023, it raised an undisclosed amount in non-equity assistance.
