Paris-based InsurTech Koala provides flight disruption and travel insurance products. It operates a B2B2C business model, where its insurance products are integrated with the airlines’ or travel agencies’ API to serve customers. The company also offers or bundles its products to other insurers that wish to expand their services to travel insurance. Koala’s insurance services are automated with fraud detection, and the company claims it requires no proof for distributing claims.

Koala’s insurance policies are served through four products. Koala Flex allows customers to cancel bookings up to a certain day before a trip, and refunds are made instantly to the bank account. Koala Trip Disruption tracks a customer’s flight and trip details in real time and notifies customers of any delays or disruptions and provides compensation immediately. Koala Missed Connection offers instant compensation if a disruption endangers a customer’s connection. Koala Comprehensive offers global travel insurance, which includes lost and damaged luggages, medical insurance, civil liability, and repatriation back home.

Key customers and partners

Koala’s partners include airlines and travel agencies such as Kayak, Ulysse, ASL Airlines, Direct Ferries, and Momondo.

The company partnered with Wakam, a white-label solutions provider, to co-create its flight disruption insurance products. Its insurance policies are underwritten by Seyna and other insurers, while Swiss Re provides reinsurance.

Funding and Financials

Koala raised USD 2.15 million in a fundraising round led by Insurtech Gateway, in March 2023. It planned to utilize the funds to expand in Europe, enhance its tech and sales teams, and develop new travel protection offerings.

In July 2020, the company raised EUR 1.6 million (USD 1.8 million) in a seed round led by London-based Insurtech Gateway, with participation from Playfair Capital and Techstars Ventures including private investors such as former CEOs of Air Malta and Brussels Airlines. The company aimed to utilize the funds for recruitment and product development.
