Space Norway is a government-owned entity responsible for overseeing Norway's space activities and infrastructure. The company operates a fleet of satellites providing maritime surveillance, communications, and Earth observation services. Its key offerings include the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission (ASBM), a two-satellite system launched in 2024 to deliver broadband connectivity in the Arctic region beyond the reach of geostationary satellites. ASBM hosts payloads from the Norwegian military, Inmarsat, and the US Space Force. Space Norway also manages the Coastal Administration's constellation of four microsatellites for ship tracking using Automatic Identification System (AIS) data.
In January 2024, Space Norway completed the acquisition of Telenor Satellite, a prominent European satellite operator. Through this acquisition, Space Norway gained ownership of Telenor's three geostationary satellites - Thor 5, Thor 6, and Thor seven - providing telecom and broadcast coverage across Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. With combined revenues of around USD 165 million in 2022 and an order backlog of USD 1.3 billion, the merged entity employs around 170 personnel, making it the largest satellite operator in Norway and a significant player in Europe.
Space Norway is also involved in developing cutting-edge technologies like the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) for maritime digitalization and the Application Development Infrastructure in Space (ADIS) microsatellite for offering space-based infrastructure as a service.
