Sateliot is a Spanish satellite telecommunications operator headquartered in Barcelona, focused on providing global connectivity for the internet of Things (IoT) devices using the 5G NB-IoT protocol. The company is developing a constellation of low-Earth orbit (LEO) nanosatellites that will function as telecommunication towers in space, enabling seamless connectivity between terrestrial and satellite networks for IoT devices.
Sateliot's innovative approach allows unmodified commercial cellular NB-IoT devices to connect directly to its satellites without requiring specialized hardware. This cost-effective technology, with devices priced under USD 5, opens up new possibilities for massive IoT connectivity in remote areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.
The company aims to launch its first four commercial satellites in 2024, following the deployment of two prototypes in previous years. Sateliot plans to expand its constellation to 250 nanosatellites within three years, providing near real-time global coverage. The company has already secured binding orders worth over EUR 150 million from telecommunications operators seeking to extend their ground-based networks using Sateliot's satellites.
In July 2023, Sateliot successfully partnered with Telefónica, a leading Spanish telecommunications company, to extend the reach of Telefónica's cellular networks via satellites based on the GSMA standard roaming. This milestone was achieved by seamlessly transitioning a cellular IoT device provisioned on Telefónica's network to Sateliot's network using a regular SIM card.
