Milrem Robotics, founded in Estonia in 2013, is a leading European developer of robotics and autonomous systems. The company specializes in unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for both military and civilian applications. Milrem's flagship product is the THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System), a versatile UGV platform that can be adapted for various missions including logistics support, casualty evacuation, route clearance, and combat operations. The THeMIS features a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain, allowing for silent electric operation when needed, and can be equipped with different payloads such as weapon systems, sensors, and specialized equipment.
In addition to the THeMIS, Milrem has developed the Type-X, a larger unmanned combat vehicle designed to support mechanized units. The Type-X can be equipped with weapon stations featuring up to 50mm cannons. Milrem also offers the Multiscope UGV for civilian applications in areas such as firefighting, mining, and forestry. The company has expanded its focus to include software development and systems integration, providing comprehensive robotic solutions to address specific capability gaps for its customers.
Milrem Robotics has significantly increased its production capacity, opening a new facility in Tallinn, Estonia in May 2024 capable of manufacturing over 500 THeMIS units annually. This expansion aims to meet growing international demand for unmanned ground systems, particularly in light of their proven effectiveness in conflict zones.
Key customers and partnerships
Milrem Robotics' THeMIS UGV has been acquired by 18 countries, including eight NATO members such as the US, UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. The company has provided vehicles to Ukraine to support logistics, casualty evacuation, and route clearance operations. In December 2022, Milrem partnered with German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to deliver 14 THeMIS UGVs to Ukraine, with seven configured for casualty evacuation and seven for route clearance.
Milrem has established partnerships with various defense industry leaders for system integration and development. The company collaborates with Singapore Technologies Kinetics, Aselsan, and FN Herstal for weapon system integrations. In December 2023, Milrem signed an agreement with the Ukrainian Defence Industry to develop next-generation multi-domain robotic defense systems, leveraging Ukraine's battlefield experience to enhance existing products and create new ones.
Milrem Robotics also leads the iMUGS consortium, a European Union-funded project to develop a standardized unmanned ground system for Europe. This project involves collaboration with seven EU member states and major European defense companies such as Safran Electronics & Defense, Nexter Systems, and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.
