Krakow, Poland-based Brainly is reportedly the world's largest online social learning platform. Middle and high school students and parents use Brainly to connect with peers and experts to receive and offer help with homework and studies. The platform operates a freemium model with most users accessing the free version and paying users gaining access to additional features with no ads. The company was founded as Zadane (which means homework in Polish) by college friends Michał Borkowski, Lukasz Haluch, and Tomasz Kraus. As of December 2020, the collaborative community had more than 350 million users across more than 35 countries, up from 150 million users in 2019 and 100 million users in 2018. About 30 million of the platform’s users are US based.
In June 2016 Brainly acquired OpenStudy, a US-based social learning platform, and in January 2018, the company purchased Bask, a video learning platform. Both have since been integrated into the Brainly platform. In June 2021, Brainly launched the AI-based “Math Solver” program in India to help users understand and solve math problems.
Funding and financials
In July 2019, Brainly raised USD 30 million in Series C funding for a US expansion. In December 2020, the company raised USD 80 million in Series D funding for product development and expansion into Brazil and Indonesia.
