TerraCOH uses its proprietary Carbon Dioxide Plume Geothermal (CPG) and Earth Battery technologies to produce baseload, emission-free electricity and grid-scale energy storage. The company captures and stores carbon dioxide from industrial processes underground which in turn is used in the geothermal energy generation process as well as storage of other forms of renewable energy underground—which enables intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind to be stored and deployed as necessary.
The use of carbon dioxide as a subsurface working fluid enables TerraCOH’s CPG technology to be more economical at lower resource temperatures while simultaneously giving the company the flexibility to provide on-demand electricity or grid-scale energy storage. The company’s geothermal power generation and energy storage solutions can be deployed across over 50% of the North American landmass, in any place where sedimentary rocks can support carbon dioxide storage.
In June 2022, TerraCOH reported plans to build a pilot project in North Dakota to demonstrate its technology for combining captured carbon dioxide and geothermal energy. The facility is expected to have the capacity to generate five to 10 MW of electricity.
Funding and financials
In June 2022, TerraCOH was awarded USD 750,000 by the North Dakota Department of Commerce to commercialize the green energy technology.
