Founded in 2015 by Adrian Graham and Carl Sjogreen, Seesaw is a student engagement platform on which students are able to showcase their work to classmates, teachers, and families. Students can share photos, videos, drawings, notes, links, files, and blogs, and record voice-overs explaining their work. Teachers can grade work, send feedback, and organize feedback by class, student, or topic. They can select or create activities for students who use Seesaw’s creative tools to reinforce their learning.
Students are thus able to build a portfolio and see their progress, driving motivation. Teachers are able to discern students’ needs and families are better able to support their child’s development. Comments on this digital show-and-tell platform are moderated by teachers. As of October 2020, Seesaw was used in one in four US schools, and as of October 2021, more than 10 million teachers, students, and family members across more than 130 countries used the platform.
In October 2021, the company announced a strategic investment of an undisclosed amount from Providence Equity Partners, a private equity firm. Seesaw will continue to be led by its co-founders.
