 Firefox developer, Mozilla, has announced that it will shut down its web-based virtual reality (VR) platform, Hubs, on May 31, 2024. Unlike many other platforms, Hubs is available for free, and enables interactions between VR headset users as well as those using regular screens or mobile devices.
 Since its launch in 2018, Hubs has not seen the same level of user inflow or recognition as platforms such as Rec Room, VRChat, or Meta's Horizon Worlds. Some of its notable features are a demonstration server, a subscription management system, and numerous resources for community use.
 Although Mozilla will no longer continue developing Hubs, it emphasizes that the platform is open sourcing and can potentially be developed by anyone interested. The "Community Edition" of Hubs, in particular, can operate on any platform compatible with Kubernetes. This includes a wide range of cloud service providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
