Whale Seeker is a Canadian startup that leverages AI to simplify marine mammal monitoring. It develops tools for detecting whales from aerial and satellite imagery using AI. The company offers AI-powered monitoring solutions, such as Möbius and Cetus, designed for various marine industries and conservation efforts. They play a significant role in wildlife conservation and policy and wildlife management by providing accurate tracking of marine megafauna populations. The company’s technology claims to identify 112% more whales than traditional methods.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2023, Whale Seeker partnered with TerraSense (an advanced AI company) and Transport Canada (a government agency responsible for transportation policies and programs). Through this partnership, the three companies would establish a real-time monitoring system to monitor and preserve the North Atlantic right whales in the St. Lawrence River. The partnership would combine Whale Seeker's AI-driven whale detection technology, TerraSense's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) monitoring solutions, and Transport Canada's use of domestic intellectual property.
In November 2022, Whale Seeker was awarded USD 529,000 from Innovative Solutions Canada as part of the Innovative Solutions Canada's testing stream for marine species and biodiversity detection technologies. This project involves analyzing 100,000 aerial images of Arctic marine mammals from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) using Whale Seeker's proprietary AI tool, Möbius.
