Around is an artificial intelligence (AI) based video calling tool founded in 2018 which incorporates modern audio technology to transform video conferencing. The company aims to make video calls complementary to work, with a focus on collaborating with teammates to complete tasks at hand. The company mainly targets businesses in the tech and creative space, known to have higher rates of distributed teams.
The company was founded by Dominik Zane, Pavel Serbajlo, and Matt Zakutny. Zane and Serbajlo built M.dot—a mobile website building app aimed at small businesses—where they managed a fully distributed team. They believed that traditional video conferencing tools such as Zoom were not built based on the modern-day requirement for video calls. Around was their idea for a video call app more suitable for employees to connect with colleagues while keeping their workflow intact.
In March 2021, the company announced that it had raised USD 10 million in a Series A funding round led by Wing Venture Capital, with participation from Forerunner Ventures and Slack Fund. Around reported that it would maintain its freemium tier and allow meeting participants to join without an account. The company will launch its paid plans in the immediate future.
