NovoClade is a company that has developed a solution for pest control without the use of harmful chemicals. Their approach involves genetically modifying invasive and harmful insect species to sterilize them at an early stage, thereby reducing their population naturally. The company's technology works by targeting specific insect species and modifying their genetic makeup to render them infertile, preventing reproduction and minimizing their numbers over time. This innovative method provides an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical-based pest control methods, avoiding the negative impact on the environment.
In 2020, NovoClade hired interns through the SciTech Internship Program to assist in building and developing a prototype for their solution. Subsequently, in Spring 2024, the company brought on board five more student interns to continue the work on the prototype. These interns, with backgrounds ranging from aerospace engineering to biochemistry and biology, were tasked with designing and constructing a device to release the genetically modified insects for biocontrol purposes.
