Internet of medical things: The backbone of disruptive healthcare innovation

The internet of things (IoT), which was coined in 1999 by Kevin Ashton, has seen an explosion in applications across several industries like smart homes, factories, transportation, and consumer wearables. By 2025, over 22 billion IoT sensors will be in use, up from nearly 10 billion today.
Across the healthcare value chain, the internet of medical things (IoMT) is transforming care delivery and experience, from remote monitoring and diagnostics to predictive analytics and individualized care. Nearly 88% of healthcare providers say they have already invested in such tech due to its efficiency.
Furthermore, medical technology (MedTech) companies currently manufacture more than 500,000 different medical devices, including wearables, implants, and stationary devices, which cover a growing number of therapeutic areas and use cases. MedTech companies are delivering more value by developing next-gen devices that incorporate IoMT, while digital health players are leveraging IoMT and optimizing clinical workflows.
In this Edge Insight, we deep dive into how IoMT is enabling the next generation of MedTech devices. We also explore its link to broader MedTech trends and how it is transforming care.
