Improper Disposal and Low Recycling Rate of Plastic Raising Concerns
Plastics account for 12% of the world’s waste, trailing only food waste and paper. Plastic packaging, which accounts for nearly half of all plastic waste, often goes uncollected and remains in the environment indefinitely. Given that plastic materials are extremely slow to decompose naturally, they have the potential to cause environmental pollution and harm wildlife. Currently, the recycling rate of plastic is low compared to glass bottles and aluminium cans. This report discusses technologies and services that are available or under development to solve issues such as improper disposal of waste plastic, as well as its recycling(*). Given its pioneering role in these areas, trends in the European market shall be the primary focus of this report.
