Afforestation-tech: Saving forests with technology
“How to grow a forest” is not a regular web search for obvious reasons. Forests grow organically—it is a rational presumption. However, the urgency to grow forests is not surprising because of concerning deforestation rates. Therefore, creating human-made forests by planting trees in areas with little tree cover has become a growing reality. This process is called afforestation, while reforestation is part of broader afforestation, which means replanting trees that have depleted in existing forest lands. Then, afforestation-tech refers to any technology that would optimize the afforestation process. From seeding drones to forest monitoring satellites to genetically modified trees, technologies are converging to boost plant growth. We identify key innovations and players within the afforestation space in this EDGE Insight.
