Grocery retailer Ahold Delhaize announced the launch of a micro-fulfillment center (MFC) pilot project in Philadelphia with its subsidiary The Giant Co., an omnichannel retailer serving Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The MFC will be equipped with Autostore’s storage and retrieval system, combined with Swisslog’s SynQ (warehouse control system) software and pick stations, and Peapod Digital Labs’ proprietary manual picking capabilities.
The new MFC is expected to fulfill around 15,000 online delivery orders weekly to cater to customer demand in Philadelphia’s Center City and South Philadelphia neighbourhoods.
AutoStore is a Norwegian provider of order fulfillment solutions using cube storage automation technology. The system consists of a 3D aluminum grid structure on which the robots can move to pick items. The company claims that the system reduces storage footprints by around 75%, compared to traditional storage space. As of September 2020, the company had over 500 installations across more than 30 countries with offices in the US, UK, Germany, France, Poland, and Japan.
