Bloom Energy teams up with Heliogen on clean hydrogen project

Partnerships

  • Bloom Energy, a next-generation solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) company, has collaborated with Heliogen, a concentrated solar energy startup, to produce low-cost clean hydrogen by combining concentrated solar energy and water.

  • Heliogen’s Sunlight Refinery Technology combined with Bloom Energy’s electrolyzers are expected to enable economically viable and cost-effective hydrogen production. The integrated technology will be deployed at Heliogen’s facility in California later this year.

  • Founded in 2001 and listed on the NYSE in 2018, Bloom Energy primarily provides modularized and scalable on-site power generation solutions using its proprietary SOFC technology. In July 2021, Bloom launched a solid-oxide electrolyzer to produce clean hydrogen with 15% - 45% efficiency gains over alternatives.

  • Founded in 2013, Heliogen focuses on generating electricity and heat using an array of computer-controlled mirrors (heliostats) that collect and concentrate sunlight to generate ultra-high temperatures of around 1,000 °C. Heliogen has yet to commercialize its technology, although it does operate a demonstration site in California.
