Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has launched “Service Marketplace”, a feature targeting freelance workers, on its platform. The global launch follows its beta launch in the US in early 2021.
The Service Marketplace, which has gained a user base of 2 million since the launch of its beta, will launch with 250 job categories with plans to increase this to 500. Currently, the service is available for free but LinkedIn plans to monetize it in the future.
<ul><li>Analyst Quicktake : LinkedIn’s freelancer platform has been in the rumor mill since February . This, undoubtedly, pits the company against disruptors such as Upwork and Fiverr. LinkedIn already has an established user base of around 800 million to which it can market the service. However, the launch details indicate that the service is missing some key features such as payments and invoicing, rate negotiations, client reviews, searching for open jobs, etc. This pales in comparison to features on Upwork and Fiverr, whose platforms are built around these fundamental features. </il>
