Kalera just announced that it is acquiring Vindara, a seed producer for the indoor farming industry.
Vindara utilizes machine learning, genomics, computational biology, and traditional breeding methods to produce seeds that could potentially generate higher output for growers.
This acquisition will enable Kalera to produce higher yields, reduce the cost of seeds, and improve its EBITDA.
Kalera currently operates two high-tech hydroponic vertical farming facilities in Orlando, Florida but announced that it would build six more vertical farming facilities in Houston, Denver, Seattle, Atlanta, Columbus, and Hawaii. These farms will begin operations in 2021. The company also has an office in Oslo, Norway. Kalera designs and develops its proprietary technology (HyCUBE technology) using IoT, big data, clean room, and AI-based process automation. The company grows leafy greens (lettuces and microgreens) and sells them to restaurants, grocery stores, resorts, and the cruise industry. Aside from growing greens, the company is open to developing farms for other companies using its patent-pending technology.
