Aqua Metals, a Nasdaq-listed metal recycler, has achieved another milestone for its “Li AquaRefining” lithium-ion recycling technology. The company has plated high-purity nickel metal from the black mass produced from recycling lithium-ion batteries.
This breakthrough comes amidst rising global prices and demand for nickel. The company reports that its AquaRefining process has the lowest environmental footprint compared to other technologies in the market, and claims that it is the most effective method as it mines for critical metals.

Founded in 2014, Aqua Metal focuses on recycling metals with its patented hydrometallurgical AquaRefining technology. The technology is water-based and claims to produce pure lead from metal waste. The company licenses its AquaRefining technology to recyclers across the globe. In 2019, the company’s refinery plant was able to produce 10 tonnes of lead per day.
