Swiss quantum software company Terra Quantum has partnered with Volkswagen Data:Lab to develop quantum applications for the automotive industry. Similarly, French quantum hardware startup Pasqal has partnered with BMW to streamline the automaker’s manufacturing processes. The terms and financial details of both partnerships have not been disclosed.
Under the Terra Quantum-Volkswagen Data:Lab partnership, the duo published two research papers that focused on applying quantum technology to enhance workflow optimization including quality control testing and using quantum machine learning to improve image recognition systems in cars.
The Pasqal-BMW partnership will leverage Pasqal’s neutral-atom quantum processors for simulations and solving complex problems in manufacturing. The joint effort is expected to lower the requirement for prototypes, saving money and time for BMW. This collaboration follows Pasqal’s victory in BMW Group’s quantum computing challenge in 2021.

Analyst QuickTake: The automotive industry seems to be the early adopters of quantum computing with several recent partnerships between quantum startups and automakers. Recently, IonQ partnered with Hyundai to develop image classification and object detection technologies and research energy-efficient lithium car batteries . Other partnerships in a similar fashion last year included Tokyo-based QunaSys and Toyota Motor as well as US-based Quantinuum (formerly Cambridge Quantum Computing before the merger with Honeywell in November 2021) and the German Aerospace Center in May 2021.
