Ahrefs, a search engine optimization (SEO) platform, has reportedly invested USD 60 million to build its own search engine known as “Yep.”
The project has a team of 11, consisting of data scientists, backend engineers, and front-end developers, with Ahrefs CEO playing an active role in its development. The firm claims that the search engine is built with content creators in mind, where 90% of its ad revenues would go to them.
The firm also stated that the funding for this project was 100% internal funds from re-invested revenues through its paid subscriptions. It claims to currently have annual revenue of USD 100 million with a customer base of 50,000+.
Analyst QuickTake: While industry commentators have expressed reservations about the impact of this venture, with its access to a large volume of data (Ahref claims it gathers more than 3x that of Google’s web crawler tool), the firm is the best positioned among SEOs to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine space.
