Urban Crop Solutions, a Belgium-based producer of growing systems inside shipping containers (called “PlantFactories”), has secured an agreement for the sale of its first “ModuleX PlantFactory” to Saudi Arabia.
The project will be carried out in several phases—the first phase will include the construction of multiple ModuleX PlantFactories, alongside an airlock space, cold storage, operations room, and a distribution area, with options to expand further. Urban Crop Solutions aims to develop this project into a long-term commercial partnership with the Government of Saudi Arabia.
This partnership comes amidst the limited resources available in Saudi Arabia for growing crops such as 1.5% available arable land, water scarcity, and unsuitable weather conditions. The Government is reportedly investing SAR 100 million (~USD 27 million) in the development of vertical farming projects in the country.
Analyst QuickTake: Urban Crop Solutions’ geographic presence thus far has been centered around the US, Europe, and Singapore. This expansion marks the company’s first foray into the Middle East.
