Opalia (formerly BetterMilk), a Canadian company developing cultured milk by using bovine mammary epithelial cells, is on track for the market launch of its cell-cultured milk by 2024 according to recent product benchmarks. After having achieved “functional complexity,” the company announced that it is set for pre-pilot scale production.
Having achieved proof-of-concept last year, Opalia has been able to replace the use of fetal bovine serum (FBS) used by many cultured milk producers, which has helped Opalia reduce manufacturing costs and achieve market viability (pending regulatory approval) according to the company.
