Motional, an autonomous vehicle technology company established as a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, has launched a robotaxi service in Las Vegas, Nevada in partnership with ride-hailing service provider Lyft.
The service will be offered free of charge to the customers initially, with plans to expand the fleet eventually and launch commercial-scale operations next year, upon gaining necessary approvals.
The rides will be conducted with two safety drivers on board to take control of the vehicle if needed.

Analyst QuickTake: Motional and Lyft have been collaborating since 2018 to bring autonomous rides to multiple US cities by 2023. Motional already has a permit to conduct fully driverless operations within the state of Nevada and started a similar robotaxi service in Las Vegas in partnership with transit tech provider Via Transportation in February this year.
