Redwire Corporation announced that it would launch the first commercial greenhouse in Spring 2023, to support space exploration missions and outer space crop production research, making it the world’s first commercial greenhouse aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
The company’s manager for the greenhouse project stated that future space research missions will depend on being able to grow entire harvests in space since plants can recycle water and produce food and oxygen. It will be crucial to speed up agricultural production research in space using tools produced by the private sector to provide crucial insights for NASA's Artemis missions and beyond.
Commercial agricultural technology company Dewey Scientific, Redwire’s customer for the inaugural flight, will grow industrial hemp in the Greenhouse for a gene expression study. The two companies are working together on technical details related to the 60 day experiment and describing its potential to demonstrate the capabilities of the facility, while advancing biomedical and biofuels research.
