NASA has selected Axiom Space to build NASA’s astronaut spacesuits for its Artemis III mission slated for 2025 which will land Americans on the moon after 50 years.
NASA reviewed proposals from two eligible vendors (Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace) before awarding the task order to Axiom Space, carrying a base value of USD 228.5 million.
The spacesuits and support equipment for Artemis III will be designed, developed, qualified, certified, and produced by Axiom Space in accordance with NASA’s key technical and safety requirements. The spacesuit contract is managed by the Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program (EHP) at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Analyst QuickTake: Axiom Space is currently developing ISS’ successor, the World’s first commercial space station, and also launched the first private missions to the ISS in April 2022. In June 2022 , NASA selected Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to develop spacesuits for the Artemis program and the ISS. While Axiom beat Collins Aerospace to build the Artemis 3 spacesuit, Collins Aerospace’s corporate ancestor Hamilton Standard won the bid to develop the spacesuit for NASA’s Apollo program (NASA’s first lunar mission) in 1962 in partnership with ILC Dover.
