General Motors (GM)’s autonomous car subsidiary Cruise has revealed plans to launch commercial robotaxi services in Austin (Texas) and Phoenix (Arizona) later this year in line with its goal of expanding geographic reach over the coming six months.
A small fleet of robotaxi will be deployed without a safety driver with plans to scale operations next year. Rides will be free of charge initially but the company is planning to begin charging customers shortly after.
The company has received the necessary permissions to start commercial rides and deliveries in Phoenix and has already mapped and driven the streets. It is yet to map and develop the necessary infrastructure for operations in Austin.
Cruise also noted its plans to ramp up manufacturing of its autonomous vehicles to support expansions to new markets. The company is also evaluating the possibility of introducing autonomous cars to the consumer market by 2025.
Analyst QuickTake: Cruise’s latest plans add Phoenix and Austin to the company’s existing commercial robotaxi services in San Francisco, California which began in June. The new cities are also among the popular destinations for autonomous vehicle development–now adding Cruise to the competition. Google’s self-driving tech unit Waymo already operates commercial robotaxi services in Phoenix and peer Argo AI is testing and has commercial partnerships underway in Austin.
