Pony.ai to begin autonomous vehicle testing in Tucson

Geographic expansion
Partnerships

  • Pony.ai, a self-driving vehicle technology company, is planning to commence testing its autonomous vehicles in Tucson, Arizona, in partnership with Pima Community College (PCC)—the company’s only autonomous vehicle operation in the US today.

  • The testing will be carried out at PCC’s Automotive Technology and Innovation Center and will have a safety driver onboard to take control of the vehicle if needed.

  • Analyst QuickTake: Previously, Pony.ai was testing autonomous vehicles in Californian cities such as Fremont and Irvine, upon approvals by state authorities in 2017. However, these permits were revoked this May, citing a minor accident and failure to monitor driver records of safety drivers. Therefore, today’s deployment will mark its only operation in the US in addition to its existing operations in China. On a separate note, Arizona is also becoming a popular destination for autonomous vehicle testing since the regulations in 2015. For example, Pony.ai’s rival and incumbent Google’s Waymo has been testing its autonomous vehicles in Phoenix, Arizona since 2017.
