Ascend Elements begins construction of its Apex 1 facility

Geographic expansion

  • Ascend Elements (formerly Battery Resources), a Massachusetts-based cathode material recycling company, began construction activities for “Apex 1,” its largest upcoming electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling and engineered materials manufacturing facility in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

  • Apex 1 will be a 140-acre campus with a 500,000 sq ft manufacturing facility that will produce cathode precursor materials (pCAM) and battery-ready cathode active materials (CAM) for 250,000 EVs per year at full capacity by late 2023. The facility will feature the company’s proprietary “Hydro-to-Cathode” process technology that claims to have higher efficiency and lower waste and carbon emissions compared to traditional cathode manufacturing.

  • Ascend Elements plans to invest USD 1 billion for the construction of Apex 1 and expects to employ up to 400 people and generate an economic impact of up to USD 4.4 billion to Kentucky over the construction period and the first 10 years of operation. The facility will also reportedly be the only domestic source of lithium-ion cathode materials for EV batteries in the US.
