Altilium (formerly Altilium Metals), a London-based cleantech startup, plans to build the UK’s largest planned recycling facility for electric vehicle batteries in Teesside slated to start production in 2025. The news comes after the Government confirmed a total of GBP 3 million of grant funding.
The site will have the capacity to recycle battery waste from more than 150,000 electric vehicles into "cathode active material" (a key component of new batteries.), creating 200 long-term jobs and 100 more construction jobs in the process.
The exact location for the plant will be decided in 2023, and might potentially co-locate with mineral processing company Green Lithium’s large-scale lithium refinery which is said to be the UK's first of its kind. These two companies are united in their mission to support the electric vehicle industry and to keep up with the increasing lithium demand in the EU and the UK.
Founded in 2020, Altilium Metals operates a recycling process to extract metals from spent electric vehicle batteries and support an electrified automotive supply chain. The company plans to take a hybrid approach of recycling and urban mining in their production process.
