Square Roots (previously Square Roots Urban Growers), a hydroponic vertical farming startup, has signed an agreement with United Natural Foods Inc (UNFI), a US-based wholesale distributor for North America, to co-locate the company’s vertical farms on-site at select UNFI distribution facilities.
According to the agreement, Square Roots will set up a 20,000 sq ft vertical farm at UNFI’s Prescott Wisconsin facility, planning to open by 2023. Crops will be harvested and packed within the farm and are expected to serve UNFI’s retail customers in Wisconsin and Minnesota including the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
Analyst QuickTake: This is Square Roots’s second strategic partnership with a national wholesale distributor/food service company, with its first one being Gordon Food Service (GFS). As of date, Square Roots operates 4 vertical farming facilities in partnership with GFS and around 20 container farms that supply over 250 stores across the US, which include popular names such as Whole Foods Market, Fresh Direct, and Meijer.
