Infarm, a Berlin-based hydroponic vertical farming system startup offering herbs and green leaves, has announced that it has successfully grown wheat in an indoor farm without the use of soil, chemicals and pesticides, and reduced water usage compared to traditional farming.
Based on initial trials, the company reported yield projections of 11.7 kg per square meter per year, equivalent to 117 tons per hectare per year when projected at scale. This yield is 26x higher than that obtained from open-field trials. The company expects that it can improve this yield by 50% in the coming years using improved genetics, hardware, and optimized growth environments.
Infarm is reportedly the first company to grow staple crops in a controlled environment and is a significant milestone in the vertical farming space. The announcement brings Infarm closer to achieving its mission of producing food to feed the world’s population.
